H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III
Ninth Catholicos of the East in Malankara
His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III was enthroned as the Catholicos of the East & Malankara Metropolitan (the Supreme Head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India) on Friday, 15th October 2021. His Holiness is the 92nd Primate on the Apostolic Throne of St. Thomas.
His Holiness was born on 12 February 1949 to Mr Cherian Anthrayos of Mattathil family, being a member of St Peters Church, Vazhoor. After his school education, he joined Kerala University and passed his BSc Chemistry. After his BSc, he joined Orthodox Seminary, Kottayam, and had his GST degree. His Holiness took his BD degree from the Serampore University and did his higher studies in Theology at Theological Academy, Leningrad, Russia. Thereupon he joined Oriental Institute, Rome, and took his MTh and PhD from there. His Holiness was ordained a deacon in 1976 and a priest in 1978 by HH Baselios Mathews I. His Holiness was escalated to the post of an Episcopa on 30 April 1991 at a function at Parumala, and metropolitan in 1993. He is a well-known teacher and a faculty member of the Orthodox Seminary, Kottayam. A philanthropist, he works relentlessly for the uplift of the poor, especially women. He has started many ventures to help give employment opportunities to women from the economically backward classes. His Holiness was also served the Holy Episcopal Synod as its secretary.His Holiness has authored a few devotional and contemplative books in Malayalam.

H. G. Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Metropolitan
Metropolitan of Kandanad Diocese
His Grace was born on 28 June 1952 at Arikuzha, Thodupuzha, to Rev. Fr Yohannan Puttanil and Mrs Mariam. He did his schooling at Government UPS School Arikuzha and NSS High School, Manakad. Thereupon he joined New Man College, Thodupuzha and passed out his Pre-degree and Degree from there. He did his MA from St John’s College, Agra.
In the theological front, he took his BD degree from Serampore College and United Theological College, Bangalore. And went for his DTh from Protestant Faculty, University of Munich.
He was ordained a priest in 1990 and the very same year was consecrated as Bishop and was given the charge of Kandanad Diocese. He was a teacher at Syrian Orthodox Theological Seminary at Vettickal during 1990-95. From 1992, His Grace was the President of Kerala Council of Churches till 1998.
Dr Athanasius is a known social worker and a philanthropist. He runs Swasraya Rehabilitation & Training Centre at Vettickal, Mulanthuruthy; Trinity Retirement Home, Kolenchery; Samanvaya Study and Dialogue Centre, Pampakuda; Sukhada Retreat Centre, Kolenchery; Santhula Hospital and Deaddiction Centre, Vadakara; and Giliyad, Retreat Centre & Orphanage, Vadkara.
His Grace is an author of few well-known books. A Comparative Study of Theological Methodologies of Irenaeus and Sri Sankara (1990); Church and Society (1992); Neethi Samooham; and Anthyokya Malankara Bandham: Oru Punarchintanam are the main titles.

His Grace was born at Elakkaranadu, a typical village in the Ernakulam District of Kerala, to a social worker Mr Markose and Mrs Saramma, Murimakkil. He had his primary education from the Government School at Maneed. After his schooling, His Grace studied at St Peter’s College, Kolencherry, and passed out with his bachelors in Malayalam.
Coming to the theological studies, he did his BD and MTh degrees from the United Theological College, Bangalore. Thereupon, he took ThM and PhD qualify (old testament theology) from Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago. His Grace has submitted his PhD paper to Dharmaram Vidyashektram, Bangalore. Meanwhile, he studied syriac at St Aphrem’s Seminary, Damascus.
Mar Meletius got into the services of Our Lord being ordained a deacon in 1973 by His Grace Paulose Mar Phelexinos, the then metropolitan of Kandanad Diocese. He was ordained a priest in 1986 by His Beatitude Catholicos Baselios Paulose II. HH Patriarc Ignatius Zakka I, ordained him as Ramban on 22 December 1990 and as Bishop on 23 December 1990 in Damascus. Since then, he is serving the Trissur Diocese as its Metropolitan.
As a priest, he was teaching at MSOT Seminary, Udaigiri. He was also serving as the vicar of St Mary’s Church, Valampur, for about four years. His Grace is also served as the president of Orthodox Christian Youth Movement.
A scholar, His Grace is a visiting professor to the Orthodox seminaries at Nagpur and Kottayam. An accomplished writer, Mar Meletius has few books—Verukal Thedi, Manavikathayude Kazhchapadukal, Swatantravum Swayam Paryapthathayum—to his credit.

H.G. Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan
Metropolitan of Thumpamon Diocese
His Grace was born in 1936 at Nellikkal, Koipram Village in Thiruvalla Taluk as the second son to Perumethmannil Mr PK Mathai and Mrs Sosamma. He has one brother and two sisters. He belongs to Koorthamala St.Mary's Orthodox Church in Chengannur Diocese.
After his schooling, he joined Kerala University and did his graduation, post graduation in Science and B.Ed from Catholicate College, Pathanahitta and Mount Tabore Training College Pathanapuram respectively. Thereupon His Grace was teaching Botany at Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta, until he was elected to the Episcopal order.
He became a priest in 1964 after his studies at Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam. He was also a member of St Basil Daya, Pathanamthitta. His Grace also served the Thumpamon Diocese as Secretary of Priests, Thumpamon Diocese. He was ordained a Bishop in 1991 and was given charge of the newly formulated Sultan Battery Diocese. And is serving it with all vigour and enthusiasm. His spiritual strength has helped the diocese to grow in all aspects within a short span of time.
His Grace is actively involved in many social activities. He is the President of a special school for mentally challenged children--Olivemala and Baselious Gregorios Mercy Home. He has so far extended helping hands poor and also runs a secret fund and educational fund for the economically weaker sections.
His Grace has many published articles to his credit. He is known for his simplicity and sweet voice.Presently he is serving the Thumpamon Diocese as its Metropolitan

Metropolitan of Mumbai Diocese
His Grace was born on 7 October 1949 at Kollad, near Kottayam, to Mr PK Kurian and Mrs Mary Kurian of the Puliyeril family. After his schooling, young George had his pre-degree studies at CMS College Kottayam. He took his bachelors in arts from the Calicut University and MA from Sree Venkateshwara University. He did his BD from Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, and got post-graduate diploma in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College London University and post-graduate diploma in Theology and Mission from Urban Theology Unit, Shefield, UK.
He was ordained a sub-deacon in 1970 and a deacon in 1974 by Catholicos HH Baselios Mathews I. Dn George became a priest in 1975 and served as Vicar, St Gregorios Church, London. He is known for his works among students and thus was serving the MGOCSM as general secretary for almost a decade. This paved way for Fr George to visit many foreign countries.
He was elected to the Episcopal rank in 1989 and thus became a monk in 1990 and was subsequently ordained in 1991. Soon, he was appointed as the Assistant Metropolitan, Mumbai Dioceses, and worked steadfast with late Dr Philipose Mar Theophilus for the progress of the Mumbai Diocese.
His Grace has held many positions in the church and other Christian societies. He had attended many international conferences and interacted with many communities such as NCCI, CASA, WCC, and CMAI.

Metropolitan of Northeast American Diocese
His Grace was born on August 13, 1959 in the famous Poothiyottu family at Mepral. His boyhood name was Cheriyachen. He has three brothers and one sister.
He studies in different schools in Kerala until he finished his High school. The first two years of his college education was in Malabar Christian College. He received his BA (English) from the St. Joseph College, Devagiri (Calicut University). He continued his studies in Theology at United Theological College, Bangalore and received a Bachelors of Divinity and a Masters of Theology.
His Grace Kuriakose Mar Coorilose ordained him Deacon on January 4th, 1986 and priest on May 16, 1990 at his home parish St. John's Church, Mepral. His Beatitude Mar Baselios Paulose II professed him as Ramban on August 5, 1993 at Moovattupuzha. His Holiness Moran Mar Ignatius Zakka Iwas I, Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, consecrated him as Metropolitan on August 15, 1993.
Metropolitan Mar Nicholovos served as the Ecumenical Secretary of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church and taught as a professor at the Malankara Syrian Seminary at Mulanthuruthy. His ecumenical activities led him to serve as a member of the Syrian Orthodox - Roman Catholic Dialogue Commission. His Grace remains very active in the Ecumenical and Inter-Religious movements. Metropolitan Mar Nicholovos was appointed as the Assistant Metropolitan of the American (Northeast American) Diocese in 2002. On February 26th 2011, His Holiness Baselius Mar Thoma Paulose II appointed Metropolitan Mar Nicholovos as the Metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese .

His Grace was born on 15 August 1949 to Mr TO Cherian Mrs Kunjelyamma Cherian of Aruvidan Pallikal Family, Kallupara. He did his high-schooling at MGD High School, Puthussery and pre-degree course at Chengannur Christian College.
He had his bachelors and masters in English literature from Madras University. Thereupon, he did his BEd and MEd from Kerala University. He took an additional MA in philosophy from Kerala University and then did his PhD.
Coming to the theological front, His Grace did his BD degree from Serampore University and MTh from the US.
He was ordained a deacon in 1970 by late His Grace Thoma Mar Dionysius and a priest in 1975 by H.H.Baselios Marthoma Didymos I. He became a Ramban on 19 December 1992.
On 16 August 1993, HH Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews II consecrated him as Episcopa and named as Jacob Mar Irenios. In August 1995, he was given charge of the Malabar Diocese as the Assistant Metropolitan. When Zacharia Mar Dionysius departed for the eternal life, His Grace was given the charge of Madras Diocese.
His Grace has served the church in different capacities as the President of Orthodox Youth Movement and President of the Orthodox Christian Bala Samajam.His Grace is presently given the charge of Kochi Diocese.

Metropolitan of Trivandrum Diocese
His Grace was born on 10 February 1948 to Mr CM John and Mrs Aleyamma John, Vadakethazhethil, Kanjickal. He did schooling at St Stephen’s High School, Pathanapuram. He persued his BA from Kerala University in English Literature. Subsequent to that, he joined the Serampore University and took his BD degree in 1974. He did his MTh from the Catholic University, Paris. His Grace persued successfully a three-year Diploma Course in Biblical Hebrew, a two-year certificate course in Aramic and advanced course in Biblical Greek at the Catholic University, Paris. His Grace also did Doctoral Research at the Lutharance School of Theology at Chicago on the topic “The Glory of God in St Paul” and took his PhD in New Testament from the Serampore University. He further did his Doctoral Research at the University of Cambridge. His Grace was ordained a deacon on 4 November 1969 by HH Mar Baselios Augen I. HH Baselious Mathews I ordained Dn Gabriel as priest on 8 January 1974. He distinctly served as vicar of many parishes such as Chenganachery, Jaipur, Dehuroad, Kuzhimattom, Mundakayam, Kanakappalam, Odanavattom Nellikunnam, and Pooyapally. He was a Professor at Orthodox Seminary, Kottayam. He was professed as a Monk on 7 August 2004 by HH Baselios Mathews II. The Malankara Syrian Christian Association met on 10 June 2004 at the Parumala Seminary, elected Fr Gabriel as a candidate to be ordained to the Episcopal Order and was ordained on 5 March 2005 by HH Baselios Mathews II. At present, His Grace is looking after the Trivandrum Diocese, which is very critical to the church in many ways.

He distinctly served as vicar of many parishes such as Chenganachery, Jaipur, Dehuroad, Kuzhimattom, Mundakayam, Kanakappalam, Odanavattom Nellikunnam, and Pooyapally. He was a Professor at Orthodox Seminary, Kottayam. He was professed as a Monk on 7 August 2004 by HH Baselios Mathews II. The Malankara Syrian Christian Association met on 10 June 2004 at the Parumala Seminary, elected Fr Gabriel as a candidate to be ordained to the Episcopal Order and was ordained on 5 March 2005 by HH Baselios Mathews II. At present, His Grace is looking after the Trivandrum Diocese, which is very critical to the church in many ways.

His Grace was born in 1954 to Mr KV Yohannan and Mrs Aleyamma Yohannan, Mannil Puthen Purayil, Kottoor, Thiruvalla. Varghese had his early education in local schools at Kottoor, and college education at SB College, Chenganachery. After his BSc from the University of Kerala, he joined Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, and took his GST and BD from Serampore University. He did his MTh from United Theological College, Bangalore, and PhD from The San Francisco Theological Seminary.
Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Osthathios ordained Varghese John a deacon on 19 April 1982, and got his priesthood from HH Baselios Marthoma Mathews II on 5 June 1982. On 28 January 1998, H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews II made him a Ramban at Parumala Seminary. Ramban Yoohanon was the Secretary of the Karunagiri MGD Ashram and Balabhavan. He has held the post of Principal, St Paul’s Mission Training Center, Mavelikkara, visiting faculty of St Thomas Orthodox Theological Seminary, Nagpur, coordinator of Malankara Orthodox Mission Board, St Thomas Karunya Guidance Center, Ulloor, Trivandrum, Karunya Vishranthi Bhavan Kattela, Trivandrum, Marriage Assistance Foundation (MAF), Sick Aid Foundation (SAF), Member of Malankara Association Managing Committee, Council Member of Parumala Seminary, Member of Catholic-Orthodox Dialogue Commission and many other posts of distinction. Yoohanon Ramaban was elevated to the post of Metropolitan on 5 March 2005 by HH Baselios Mathews II along with His Grace Mar Gregorios, His Grace Mar Theophilos, and His Grace Mar Dionysius at Parumala Seminary. He took the mantle of Niranam Diocese from illustrious His Grace Mar Osthathios. His Grace has widely travelled in the Gulf, the US and in the European countries. He is working tirelessly to transform the Church into a missionary Church.

His Grace took his Masters degree in Sociology from the University of Kerala. His Grace learned Syriac from Very Rev.Thomas Ramban during the period 1973 – 1974. His Grace passed G.S.T in 1978 and B D in 1979 from the Orthodox Theological Seminary. His Grace ordained sub-deacon on 25th March 1977, deacon on 8th December and priest on 7th January 1980. His Grace was ordained as Ramban by his Holiness Baselius Marthoma Didimus Catholicos. His Grace received a diploma in 1990 from Geneeva.

His Grace was born on 15th September 1955 as the eldest son of Mr.P.M.George and Mrs. Aleyamma George of Punchayil family in Pandankary, Edathua, Alapuzha. His Grace is a member of St. Mary's Orthodox Church, Padankary.
His Grace’s early education was in Thalavady. After passing the S. S. L. C. Examination His Grace became a member of Perunad Bethany Ashram. Graduating in English literature as a student of Baselius College Kottayam, His Grace joined the Orthodox Theological Seminary, took his B. D. degree and was ordained as a priest in 1982.
His Grace took M. A. in History from the University of Kerala and B.Ed. from Sardar Patel University. His Grace was the Principal of Bethany St. John's Higher Secondary School during the period between 1987 and 1996. His Grace had been the President of Perunad YMCA for a long time. His Grace is the Secretary of the Sanyasi-Sanyasini Sangham of the Malankara Orthodox Church.
From 1996 His Grace has been the Superior of Bethany Ashram. His Grace has also served as the Manager of Angamuzhy Orthodox Centre and member of the Ecumenical Trust. His Grace was ordained as Ramban at Parumala on 4th December. His Grace was ordinated as bishop on 19 feb 2009 at Puthupally st george orthodox church.

He stood first in the Master's Degree Exam of Madras University and won the “Chithanass" award and the gold medal in 1981. His Grace took the M. Phil, Ph. D. Degrees from the University of Kerala and his B.D. degree from the University of Serampore. His Grace was ordained deacon in July 1980. He was ordained as a priest on 4th December 1985. He got training in Christian leadership from the Haggai International Institute Singapore in 2005.
His Grace had been teaching in the Dept. of Zoology at St. Stephen's College Pathanapuram. From 2000 .His Grace had been the director of the research department of Zoology. His Grace won the “Man of the year" award from American Biographical Institute in 2003 and St. Berchman's award for the Best University Teacher in 2008. His Grace is ever active as a guide and mentor in meditation, preacher, researcher and ecological theologian.
